Introduction
The mid-size SUV segment is witnessing a surge in popularity with several new launches. The second-generation Kia Seltos, the new Tata Sierra, and the upcoming Renault Duster are the latest contenders. We analyze the March sales data for both the Sierra and Seltos.
Sales Performance
In March 2026:
- Kia Seltos: 11,041 units sold
- Tata Sierra: 9,003 units sold
This translates to a difference of 2,038 units, with the Seltos selling more.
In the first two months combined:
- Seltos: Sold 3,636 more units than Sierra.
- Sierra: Sold 97 more units than Seltos in February.
Tata Motors Clearing Sierra Backlog
Tata Motors has announced completing deliveries of 20,000 Sierras in March. The new Sierra received massive interest with over 1 lakh bookings within 24 hours of the portal launch. However, production constraints have led to longer waiting periods.
Recent delivery events included:
- 81 Sierras delivered in Kolkata on a single day.
- 111 Sierras delivered in another event.
Production Challenges for Sierra
Lower monthly volumes for the Sierra are due to supply-side limitations, including:
- Shared production facilities with high-demand models like the Nexon.
- Tier-1 to Tier-3 supplier bottlenecks caused by the boom in automotive manufacturing.
- Increased industry volumes (4.5 lakh units per month) and demand for critical components.
